Self-Integrating Systems

The primary objective of the Manufacturing Systems Interoperability program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is the development of software systems that describe their capabilities and can automatically negotiate meaningful interfaces as needed in a dynamic environment.

Using the methodology for ontology design using classification theorems, Grüninger implemented a prototype of one component of such a self-integrating system has been in what became known as the Twenty Questions Wizard, which automatically generates semantic mappings between PSL and other ontologies based on input from users. This has also led to the design of a software tool that supports semi-automatic semantic integration of process applications by inference with the semantic mappings.
